The Company
Behind the Machine
Unitree Robotics didn't just build a robot. They built the infrastructure, the supply chain, and the market — then used it to manufacture something that shouldn't exist yet.
Who Is Unitree?
Unitree Robotics is the Hangzhou-based company that quietly became the most dominant force in legged robotics. While Western companies charge $74,500 for a robot dog, Unitree charges $1,600 for a comparable model. Their secret: mastery of China's vast hardware supply chain.
Founded by Wang Xingxing, Unitree's robots have performed synchronized martial arts at China's Spring Festival Gala, conducted trials at Tokyo's Haneda Airport for Japan Airlines, and shipped to research labs and enterprises across North America, Europe, and Japan.
According to research firm Omdia, Chinese companies accounted for nearly 90% of global humanoid robot sales in 2025. Unitree leads that charge.
The GD01 Story
On May 12, 2026, Unitree founder Wang Xingxing climbed into the chest cavity of a 3.2-metre-tall red metal robot, buckled into the racing seat, and walked it forward. Then he punched through a wall. With one strike.
Chinese media immediately called it a "Gundam." Western press compared the cockpit to Ellen Ripley's Power Loader from Aliens. The video went viral within hours. Lukas Ziegler, a prominent European robotics analyst with 54,000 followers, shared the demo and called it "the bigger picture" for Chinese robotics.
Unlike a concept vehicle or a promotional stunt, the GD01 is Unitree's first foray into manned robotics — and they confirmed to multiple media outlets that it is a real, orderable product. Price: from $650,000 USD.
